About

What is Heavy Mural?

Heavy Mural was created to help you get sticky-note murals on the walls by hopefully simplifying the process, which will hopefully result in more hair retained on your head instead of laying on the floor. Granted, the idea of tackling an art project that includes the placement of possibly thousands of adhesive paper shapes to your walls is daunting, but our goal is to take out as much of the guesswork as possible and get you on your way to great wall art.

How did Heavy Mural come about?

Brian had just moved into a new home and wanted to decorate his walls without using paint. After thinking on it a while, he decided that a sticky-note mural would be fun. So, he set off onto the internet in search of instructions for creating a mural. The guides that he found were more difficult and involved than he expected - for just the prep work alone. “Shouldn’t there be an easier way?” He then sent an e-mail to Chris saying, “Hey, as one of Heavy Robot’s side projects, what do you think about creating a sticky-note mural generator?”

Usually these kinds of ideas are cataloged and filed away for the days when we are not busy with service work under the Heavy Robot name. But Chris was inspired by this idea and decided to see how far he could run with it.

Chris built a couple of dev explorations testing out the main concepts of the app, and felt confident this could be achieved in a relatively short time frame. So he made the decision to start combining the explorations into the beginnings of the app you see on the home page today.

While developing the app, Chris made the initial design for both the app and the website. Brian got his hands further into the project by building out the the WordPress managed site we have now, creating all the styles and layouts from the design comp.

We discussed back and forth how the various features should act, and stayed true to mantra of getting something out onto the web that would be usable. There are additional features we wanted to add from the get go, but these would have all increased Flash development time and not been a very large pay-off (version 2.0, maybe?). So those ideas and features we decided to put off and wait to see what people who use the site say about it and see if they agree.

The development began on March 6th, 2009 and was declared finished on April 1st, 2009. It took about a week and a half’s worth of time to complete the project from start to finish. This of course had to be sprinkled in to the weekends and down-time from service work.

We’re very happy with how things turned out and hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed making it!
